National Conference of Viet Nam Veteran Ministers
Concerning Funding for VA Health Care
A Peace and Justice Statement
October 15, 2004
The National Conference of Viet Nam Veteran Ministers, meeting in Chicago, IL, October 11 to October 15, 2004, and after prayerful reflection, adopted the following resolution concerning mandatory funding for VA health care:
Whereas, the VA medical system is continually underfunded as a result of being considered as part of the discretionary funding process (Congress allocating funds each year for veterans’ medical care), and
Whereas, this current process of discretionary funding has created such uncertainty in the VA medical system that many eligible veterans are currently enduring waiting periods as long as six months to receive even the primary care to which they are entitled, and
Whereas, eliminating such uncertainty about funding would allow the VA to focus more clearly on serving both the current veteran population as well as those who will soon be veterans and in need of the care promised by the Congress to all veterans,
Therefore, we wish to associate our organization with other veterans’ organizations and urge the Congress of the United States to pass and immediately implement mandatory funding, properly indexed, to support the VA in its mission of caring for our nation’s veterans.
