National Conference of Viet Nam Veteran Ministers
Commendation of Senator Robert Byrd
A Peace and Justice Statement
October 23, 2003
The National Conference of Viet Nam Veteran Ministers, meeting in New York City, October 20 to October 24, 2003, and after prayerful reflection, adopted the following resolution of commendation concerning Senator Robert Byrd of West Virginia:
We who are veterans of Vietnam remember the lively discourse that existed during the Vietnam War. Though we did not always agree with the positions voiced we appreciated that this freedom of discourse had been purchased by the blood of earlier veterans, and we were proud to have served in that tradition in our own time. We are disturbed that during the current conflicts since September 11th of 2001 the quality of our national discourse has degenerated as open discourse and disagreement have been labeled by some as "unpatriotic." We do not believe the freedom of such discourse should be abridged under the guise of "national security."
We commend Senator Robert Byrd of West Virginia for his courageous statements drawing attention to the "silence" of the current Congress concerning the current war in Iraq. Senator Byrd’s statements reflect our yearning for a national discourse based upon convictions rather than convenience, a discourse reflecting concern for truth rather than re-election. We commend Senator Byrd for his courage and integrity.
